City of Gold

Sawubona! Welcome to Johannesburg, also known as Jozi or Joburg. Joburg is the biggest city in South Africa and one of largest cities in the continent. Visitors of Johannesburg will enjoy a vibrant and welcoming culture with incredible food, shopping, and a rich history.

South Africa’s history is unlike any other and Joburg is the birthplace of today’s modern South Africa. Liliesleaf Farm, which lies in the midst of the leafy suburb of Rivonia, played a rather pivotal role in the history of South Africa. Once the center of the liberation movement and a safe base for African National Congress activists, the now Liliesleaf heritage site is where the long journey to an independent South Africa began. With the Apartheid Museum and the Mandela House both in reasonable traveling distance, you can spend a few hours or an entire day learning about the anti-apartheid movement directly from these nationally recognized historical organizations.

Joburg is full of life — day or night, you’ll find charming suburban towns and a bustling downtown city. Be sure to visit the many markets that Joburg has on the weekends, if you’re hoping to find a unique experience that only Joburg can provide. The Neighborhoods Market, located in the heart of the city, provides two floors worth of artisanal food, craft beers, and cocktails that you won’t want to miss. And of course, you won’t want to leave any of the markets without a good helping of Biltong — an international jerky-like food produced in South Africa that is famous for its delicious, smokey flavor.

A visit to Maboneng, one of the most renowned creative districts in the world, will inspire the artists in your group with unforgettable murals and unmatched street art. Unlike many other cities, street art is legal. This has led to both local and world-renowned artists gracing the many walls and buildings of Joburg with impactful art you wouldn’t be able to find anywhere else. As well, Maboneng is known for its delicious restaurants and markets, making it one of the best places in the city to socialize and make new friends.

The people of Joburg will welcome you and your attendees with open arms. Whether it be your cab driver or a new friend at a local bar, you’ll find every social experience to be friendly and warm. Don’t be shy, ask your new local acquaintances where your guests should visit next — they’ll be excited to give you a taste of the city they love and provide you advice on how to stay safe and comfortable during your visit.
